Bira calls for retailers to qualify for Covid home-test kits

Bira is calling for retailers to qualify as 'essential' workers and be provided with free Covid home testing kits.

While the Government has made available free workplace rapid flow tests to businesses of all sizes, Bira would like to see it go one step further to protect retail staff and shoppers.

Instead, Bira is asking that retailers are provided with at-home test kits which can be carried out twice a week.

Andrew Goodacre, Bira CEO, said: "Independent retailers want to do all they can to keep employees and shoppers safe.

"We support the Government’s pledge to provide free work-place testing to smaller businesses, but in general these are not suitable for small retailers because of the space restrictions.

"We believe that people who work in retail are essential workers who have kept serving their customers at the worst times over the past 12 months. We would therefore like to see home-testing kits made available to independent retail businesses so that employees can test themselves at home twice per week (as people do in education). We feel this would be another step towards a safe high street, keeping people safe and keeping shops open."

Bira members have until March 31, 2021, to register for free workplace testing and we recommend you register in case at-home tests also become available.
