Bira fights government plans to turn vacant shops into homes

Bira has joined other heads of the high street to fight government plans to allow empty shops to be turned into housing without planning permission.

Housing Minister Robert Jenrick reportedly wants to make it easier for developers to turn vacant high street units into homes.

However, Bira - along with 26 other business organisations including the Association of Convenience Stores (ACS) and the Booksellers Association - have written to Mr Jenrick asking him to reconsider the policy.

Signatories of the letter say the plan 'risks putting the long-term health of the high street at risk for the sake of short-term stimulus'.
