Retail staff should be priority for Covid vaccine, says Bira

Proposals to prioritise retail staff for early immunisation against Covid-19 have been backed by Bira.

Company CEO Andrew Goodacre has said he is 'very supportive' of plans which could see public-facing shop staff receive coronavirus vaccines sooner rather than later.

Shop staff are one of the groups of workers including teachers and police employees recognised as needing protection from the virus in order to continue their vital work.

Here, the Daily Mirror report that retail staff are being considered a priority group for the jab.

It follows Health Secretary Matt Hancock's pledge that: "We'll look at, of course, teachers and police and others, but also we'll look at shop workers."

Andrew Goodacre, Bira's CEO, said: "I am very supportive of this proposal. Last year the Government recognised the very important role played by retail staff to ensure that vital services were maintained – retail was like an emergency service in this respect.

"Retailers want to continue to support their communities and every day staff put themselves at risk. It makes real sense to prioritise this group of workers who have never failed to rise to the challenge throughout this crisis."
