Report: Number of indies rise for first time in four years

Numbers of independent retailers have risen for the first time in four years, according to new figures from the Local Data Company (LDC).

The LDC report says that barbers, bakers, convenience stores and takeaways are plugging the gap left by collapsed chains with 804 new indies opening in the first half of 2021.

Bira welcomes these figures. CEO Andrew Goodacre said: " The trends in this report are very welcome and show that independent retailers are at the heart of the high street, with large chains disappearing or moving online.

"The rise in ‘service retailing’ has been rising for some time with growth in barbers, cafes, etc. The traditional retailers still have challenges, but independents are proving more resilient than many of their larger rivals.

"Bira is urging the Government to further recognise the importance of the independent retailer by implementing supportive policies that permanently reduce rates and encourage further investment in systems and technology."

The figures were reported in The Guardian here
