Don’t mention the B word!

At 11pm on Friday March 29 2019, the UK is scheduled to leave the European Union. As the negotiations drag on, what effect, if any, is this saga having on retail? And what effect might it have once a deal is finally done? We asked some members for their thoughts.

AT A&M BARLEY, a hardware shop in Bognor Regis, Sussex, Jonathan Barley said: “I don’t believe that Brexit has had any direct specific effects on our business and how we operate so far. Indirectly though I am sure that it is adversely affecting the overall economic situation. In particular, it is affecting currency volatility, which pushes up prices, and the general uncertainty, which hits consumer confidence. I would expect this to continue and worsen in the run-up to and after Brexit.
