Membership Terms & Conditions

British Independent Retailers Association


This document sets out the terms and conditions of membership of The British Independent Retailers Association and its associated businesses (“bira”, “We” or “Us”) and should be read in conjunction with the Constitution and Rules (Linked to website page) which contain provisions relevant to the operation of the association.

These terms and conditions are subject to variation from time to time. Variations will be notified on our website – – and the latest version of these terms and conditions will be available there.

Through your membership with bira, you will meet and be introduced to other members who offer products and services which may be of use to you in your business. If you purchase any product or take any advice or assistance from another member of bira, this will be an arrangement purely between yourself and the other member. bira acts as agent to introduce one member’s services to another member and does not accept any liability for products sold or advice/assistance given by one member to another member on any matter whatsoever.

Membership of bira includes access to business services, including the in-house buying group – bira direct.  Terms and conditions for the use of bira direct can be found on the bira direct website. You can view these terms and conditions by clicking here .

Eligibility for Membership

To be eligible for retail membership your company must be trading as a retailer or a dealer, from a business rated shop, showroom, warehouse or yard. You must sign a declaration to this effect, and undertake to comply with the Constitution and Rules of bira. The membership application form constitutes such a declaration, including the online application process.

Right of Membership Services

As a right of membership, bira members are eligible for unlimited use of bira legal, including eligibility for £50,000 indemnity cover (as long as all advice is followed from the outset). Members are represented through bira’s campaigning and policy work and they will receive industry updates in the form of magazines and email alerts. An exclusive membership area within the bira website is also available to all bira members.

Additional Services

bira members can also take advantage of a range of bira approved business services. These include bira legal one-2-one service, card processing, bira direct, bira bank, bira pensions, bira insurance, Oxford Summer School, bira training, business banking, bira music, accountancy service, telecoms, utilities, branded carrier bags, shop fitting, tax free bikes, point of sale finance, mobile marketing, office equipment, business stationary, medical insurance, debt collection, bira clearing, rating appeal service, asbestos consultancy, hotel discounts and events.

bira reserves the right to amend or withdraw any right of membership services or additional services, and such amendment shall not give rise to any liability for refund of membership fees paid. Other additional services may also be offered from time to time.


Upon acceptance of your application the date of joining bira will be the date of submission of your application, and future subscriptions will be due on the anniversary of this date each year. Subscriptions fees are reviewed annually and the current fees are provided on our website. By submitting an application form online, you are deemed to have signed the application form.

Within 3-5 days of completing your application you will be contacted by one of our membership team with further details of our benefits and by submitting your application you give your consent for us to contact you.

bira reserves the right to refuse any application for membership and to refuse to accept the renewal subscription from any member in accordance with its Constitution and Rules. If your application is refused any subscription paid will be returned to you.


You may resign from bira membership at any time by writing to the membership team, 225 Bristol Road, Edgbaston, B5 7UB or by emailing

On resignation taking effect or other termination, the benefits of the membership package will cease and you will not be entitled to the benefits of any part of the membership package after the date of cancellation/termination. Resignations will take effect from the last day of the current period of membership (usually a period of 1 year). Refunds for membership subscriptions are not provided.

How we communicate with you

When you join bira, you provide us with your details, including your address and email. By giving us this information you are agreeing that bira may contact you from time to time (by email, SMS text message or post), with information relating to services, products and events.

You may, at any time, opt out of receiving communications from bira, change your contact details or set your email preferences, by contacting one of the membership team on 0121 446 6688 or by emailing


The information provided will be used to administer your membership of bira and any divisions, subsidiary companies and all third parties (henceforth referred to as “the Group”). It will help us to manage your access to membership benefits, including those provided by subsidiary companies and all third parties, and provide you with information (by post, fax, email, telephone or SMS), which we believe may be of interest or benefit.

Your business name, trading location and contact details may also be included in any listing of members produced by the Group on its websites, in the members’ handbook or summary of members issued to Members or Associate Members of the Group. By paying your membership subscription you accept the above.
