Bira backs £60 million handout to better fund implementation of Covid-19 guidance

A new £60 million handout from the Home Office to better fund implementation of coronavirus guidelines is being backed by Bira.

Today (Thursday, September 8, 2020), the Government announced the funding, which will be split equally between the police force and local councils to support compliance and enforcement activity on high streets.

The extra measures, announced by the Prime Minister, is part of efforts to curb the rise in coronavirus cases.

Bira has been calling for better support for independent retailers and local high streets, to ensure shopping remains safe and avoid a second complete lockdown.

Andrew Goodacre, Bira's CEO, said: "Bira supports this initiative as it is vital that we keep shopping safe to avoid any further lockdowns for the whole of retail.

"We want to see the new marshals/ambassadors and the police support the independent retailers in implementing the guidelines and managing the general public.

"As we approach a crucial period for retail with the build up to Christmas, we have to retain consumer confidence in the high street. Retailers will continue to keep shoppers and employees safe."
