Bira: We need one last push from government to help economy recover

Bira has requested one last push from the Government to help the economy - and the independent retail sector - recover from the pandemic.

The request was made in a meeting Bira held with the new Secretary of State for Business, Kwasi Kwarteng, and then again in a separate meeting with other Ministers from the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS).

Bira's CEO Andrew Goodacre has already exchanged letters with Mr Kwarteng. More about that here

Following the meetings, Andrew said: " It is clear that the Government recognises the challenges faced by independent retailers.

"Bira has consistently made the point that retailers are more vulnerable now than they were last March which is why the support made available last year needs to be retained. The priority is to extend the business rates holiday for a further 12 months, targeting the support to those business most impacted by the lockdown periods.

"We also need to see an extension to the rent moratorium that is due to expire on March 31, so that businesses have the opportunity to recover without the threat of an enforced closure.

He added: "The Government has invested £285 billion in supporting businesses through this crisis. We now need one final push to help the economy to recover, otherwise that huge investment will have been wasted.”

  • Bira member questions submitted for the meeting with Business Ministers will be answered in due course.
