Tributes paid to former President of BHF

Tributes have been paid to Terry Reeks, former President of the British Hardware Association (BHF), who died earlier this month.

Terry died on April 7, 2021 in hospital in Ryde, Isle of Wight, after not fully recovering from an operation he'd had before Christmas.

Terry was President of BHF - now Bira - from 2008-9.

Born on April 21, 1945, in Chiswick, west London, he grew up to be a motorcycle enthusiast, and an early job was in an independent hardware store.

He got a job at Cato’s hardware Company, and rose to be manager/buyer of the flagship Chiswick High Street store. He then became their group central buyer, and moved to their offices in Aldershot, Hampshire. At that time Cato had the greatest penetration in London by any hardware company. Terry also become Chairman of the Middlesex branch of BHF.

Cato’s London success led to Robert Dyas taking an interest, and looking to expand in 1990 they bought the 15 branch Cato group. Installing their own buyers, leaving Terry to seek pastures new. Terry had married Pauline in 1989, and positions led him to being buying Director of Boxstar. They imported acrylics, melamine and a large range of window blinds.

At this time Terry attended the soon to be named Five Counties branch, which as an amalgamation of his former Middlesex branch, plus several other west of London branches. He and Pauline were active members, even after their move to the Isle of Wight.

In 2004 they opened 'Just Home' in Ryde town centre on the island, which became very successful. It not only served the public, but also caterers, hotels and landladies needs to look after their guests.

Pauline and Terry closed Just Home at the end of 2016 so they could finally retire. Their final home was a lovely bungalow in Binstead, near Ryde on the island.

Terry is survived by his wife, Pauline, and two children, six grandchildren and fout great grandchildren
