Why entering awards is worth your while
Awards are a fantastic opportunity to promote your business. Not only can they encourage more footfall to your shop but they can also lead to greater exposure in the media and on social media.
Britain’s Best Small Shop competition has just launched, managed by the Independent Retailers Confederation (IRC). It’s open to any UK independent retailer, selling goods or services to the public- that’s you!
“I won’t win anyway”
Even if you get shortlisted for the award you can still shout about your success. This is the type of story your local newspaper is crying out for – let them know about it. Take some high-resolution photos ready to send out of you in your shop. Talk about this across all of your social media channels, pop it on a chalkboard outside your shop. Sing it from the rooftops! You might also think about doing a special offer to thank your customers, creating a bit of excitement in the shop for you and your staff.
“It won’t make a difference to my sales”
Any additional promotion of your business could encourage people to your shop – and this PR is free! Your local community will want to support you and want to see why you’ve been shortlisted. If you win the award, the national exposure you get will also be a great chance to broaden your reach and encourage customers to travel further to your shop, or if you trade online it will encourage more traffic to your site.
“I’m too busy”
Yes, it might take some time to fill in the application, especially when you are busy in your shop. But taking the time will mean you have the words for another award entry in the future and it might also work to motivate your staff and encourage greater team comradery and local support.
“I’ve got nothing to shout about”
We know some retailers can be modest in their approach. You just think you are doing what you’ve always done – serving your customers. However, in these times when retailing is more difficult than it used to be, if you are succeeding where others haven’t, if you go above and beyond for your customers or if you are diversifying or changing your business model and giving it everything to succeed- then you have something to shout about. You never know you might just inspire other retailers too. So don’t be shy!
“It costs too much to enter”
The competition closes on the 9th September and the shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend the competition reception at the Houses of Parliament in November, where they will have the opportunity to meet with MP’s, trade representatives and other shortlisted retailers, before the winner and runners up are announced.
