How you'll benefit
Throughout the year you’ll receive our membership newsletter, emails and membership materials as well as any other useful information that benefits independent retailers.

Recently we’ve shared information and resources focusing on topics such as GDPR, pension contribution increases, cyber security, Brexit, business rates, women in retail, supporting disability within retail, currency changes, government initiatives including tackling knife crime and monitoring corrosive material sales, national wages and the impact of the budgets on retailers.

We work closely with our in-house publishing team and service partners to provide tailored advice specifically for independent retailers that is topical and pertinent, helping to encourage growth. Examples of our tailored content includes items and resources on key retail trends for independent stores, tackling instore theft, driving sales through layout & positioning techniques, dealing with adverse weather conditions, how to avoid stockouts, flexible working and social media benefits for businesses, to name a few which are all available on the bira website.

Keeping our members in the loop

  • bira membership newsletter – a fortnightly e-newsletter that is an invaluable source of advice, support, savings and service information. It ensures members are well informed on the latest matters of legislation and compliance affecting their businesses.
  • Benchmarking surveys – we run two major surveys throughout the year – our Quarterly Sales Monitor (QSM) and annual Wages Survey. The surveys & their reports are the only of their kind that focus exclusively on independent retail within the UK. All reports are then used to influence the media and Government though our Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee (LPAC).
  • Knowledge Hub – members have unlimited access to articles, research, fact sheets, legal documents, opinion pieces, webinars and videos through our regularly updated Knowledge Hub.
  • Industry related, services & event emails – receive updates & specific emails on important industry news, member services, events and exhibitions.
  • Membership materials – in addition to our electronic communications, we understand the value of a physical flyer or booklet. That’s why along with printed service flyers bira members receive a brand-new Membership Directory for each year of membership. It covers all membership services, benefits and includes the bira direct buyers guide.

All members receive a copy of the bira Membership Directory containing everything you need to know on all bira services and the bira direct suppliers directory (AKA buyers guide). Updated annually, the directory is our members guide for discovering just how beneficial being a member can be, making it one of the most important communications we have.
