Quarterly Sales Monitor (QSM)

Reflecting the true state of sales for the independent sector

Our QSM is the only UK sales monitor report for independent businesses.

About the QSM

The Quarterly Sales Monitor is our exclusive member survey that we run four times a year, looking at the true state of the independent retail industry in the UK.

Collated from twelve different business sectors including; DIY/Hardware, Clothing & Footwear, and giftware retailers to name a few, the QSM allows businesses to benchmark their sales against the rest of the retail industry, comparing sales across their region and sector.

Finally, members can comment freely on their sales and trading, as well as their thoughts on the state of UK retail.

Once complete, the results are analysed and put together in a report which all participants receive. We use the reports to influence the media and Government through our Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee (LPAC).

The next QSM (Q4) will take place from 1 January – 16 January 2020.

Support for independent businesses, by independent businesses.

The QSM is the only survey that monitors the performance of independent businesses only.

This allows for an accurate report on the state of sales for independent businesses across the UK, that is then presented to the Government, Bank of England (BoE) and media. Members are able to comment freely on their thoughts and concerns, with issues such as Brexit, parking and rates, to name a few, often highlighted.

The report shows the Government, BoE and media what independent businesses are saying first hand and forces them to take notice – making it the only survey of its kind to do this.

Benefits of completing the QSM:

  • The produced report and results are used to directly influence the Government, BoE and the media
  • The only survey of its kind that analyses the performance of businesses by region and sector
  • The only survey of its kind that asks businesses about their confidence about the year ahead
  • An opportunity to hear what like-minded members and other businesses are saying in their respective sectors, with all member comments included
  • All survey entries are completely anonymous, allowing for honest and accurate results
  • Short and simple 9 question survey, that doesn’t take up too much of your time
  • The completed report is emailed to all respondents

Reporting the findings to the Government, BoE and media to influence change.

After every survey we report the results to the Government and media with the aim of influencing change.

Every QSM report is taken to our LPAC meeting, so the committee can hear first hand what retail businesses are saying, providing them with an accurate insight into the real state of the high street.

We also publish press releases (see below) summarising the key findings, that we send to our press contacts so the findings can reach a national audience.

Through our policy work, we’ve already been successful in influencing change in specific areas. It was through our campaigning that the Government announced a reduction of business rates by a third, in 2018.

This shows that we really are able to help businesses and the high street, so the more members we have completing the QSM, the stronger our influence is when presenting the results at the LPAC.

Therefore, it is vital that we have input from as many businesses as possible.

Andrew Goodacre, Bira’s CEO: “We’ve been fighting the corner of independent businesses across the UK for over 100 years, campaigning for a level playing field and we’ve drawn on the strength of our membership mass to do this.

The QSM has become one of our strongest tools to campaign for change, and as we continue on I strongly encourage all members to complete our surveys, to help us do this.”
