Is 'service retailing' the future of our high streets?

Is 'service retailing' - such as cafes, hairdressers and nail salons - and experiential shopping the future of our high street?

That was the topic of a feature on ITV Central news about Birmingham's beleaguered retail landscape, which included an interview with Bira CEO Andrew Goodacre.

Birmingham has lost three of its major retail players in the last year - Debenhams, John Lewis and Topshop amongst others - and, according to the report, now has empty space the size of six football pitches. One of the units is being eyed up for an adventure golf firm with the focus being shifted to 'experiences' over traditional shopping.

Meanwhile, Andrew says that the growth of 'service retailing' is down to the fact that unlike many goods you cannot buy them online - and this could result in a further shift in retail trends.
