WINNER | Headhunters Barber Shop & Railway Museum, Enniskillen

A unique blend of barbering and heritage, Headhunters is a Fermanagh gem combining haircuts with rich Irish railway history.

Headhunters Barber Shop & Railway Museum blends traditional barbering with Fermanagh’s railway heritage, making it a standout high street attraction.

Founded in 1981 by brothers Nigel and Gordon Johnston, it has long welcomed customers with warmth and nostalgia—now serving third generations. In 2002, their adjoining ladies’ salon became a railway museum, showcasing one of Ireland’s largest collections of small railway memorabilia. Covering the Great Northern, Sligo, Leitrim & Northern Counties, and Clogher Valley railways, it operates as a registered charity and award winner, including the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.

Admission is free, with visitors coming worldwide. Dog-friendly and community-focused, it hosts school groups, events, and talks. A popular model railway helps children, including those who are neurodivergent, enjoy the space. Headhunters remains a unique community hub—offering not just haircuts, but history and connection.

HIGHLY COMMENDED | Black City Records, Bristol

Black City is a unique metal record shop and safe space, supporting alternative culture, mental health, and the local community.

Black City began as one of the UK’s first Heavy Metal record shops, and the only one in the South West. With its founder’s counselling background, it was designed as more than retail—a hub for alternative counter-culture, where every customer is treated with care and individuality.

The shop encourages people to feel comfortable in themselves and contribute to the local music scene, supporting promoters, venues, and businesses. It also prides itself on being an independent record store—ordering requests, undercutting big retailers, and stocking titles others overlook.

Black City supports the local air ambulance service through donations, merchandise sales, and funds raised after a 2022 break-in. It also pioneered a peer support group for mental health, which has grown into events, a WhatsApp group, and in-store drop-ins. Talks are underway with Avon & Somerset Police to become a designated 'Safe Place' for vulnerable individuals.

Leanne Fallon, Bira Membership Support Executive

“The support Black City Records give around mental health really struck a chord with us. In today’s world, that kind of care and community focus feels absolutely priceless.”

HIGHLY COMMENDED | DRAKE The Bookshop, Stockton on Tees

An inclusive indie bookshop in Stockton that champions community, literacy, and access, with pay-it-forward schemes and local outreach.

This independent Stockton-on-Tees bookshop is proudly community-focused and inclusive. Staff are Dementia Awareness trained, the shop has full wheelchair access, and a loyalty scheme allows customers to donate points to a Pay-it-Forward fund for others to buy books or attend free events.

At Christmas, they run a gifting campaign with Stockton Council and local schools, ensuring children receive books they’ve requested, funded by customer contributions. The shop also delivers projects such as educating schoolchildren on River Tees biodiversity with the Canal and Rivers Trust, leading to creative work displayed in a gallery. Authors regularly visit schools for free workshops, often funded through Pay-it-Forward, with recent guests including AF Steadman and Matt Goodfellow.

Each summer, the Great North Author Tour brings writers into schools and celebrates independents during Bookshop Week. The shop also donates books to charities, foodbanks, hospitals, and even a pub library, while supporting the local BID and fellow independents.

HIGHLY COMMENDED | Frankie & Johnny's Cookshop, York

Frankie & Johnny's champions community, retail activism, and indie spirit on York's Bishy Road—online, in-store, and on the streets.

As a bricks-and-mortar business, Frankie & Johnny's engages closely with customers, sourcing requested items and refreshing window displays to keep its high street presence vibrant. Active on social media, they promote products, support fellow traders, and run the long-standing #FridayQuiz gadget challenge, building strong in-store and online loyalty.

As a founding member of the Bishopthorpe Road Traders Association, they’ve helped secure the British High Street of the Year award, coordinated community street parties, and organised decorations like festive lights and the much-loved bunting—earning Bishy Road the nickname “Notting Hill of the North.”

Currently, they are leading a campaign against a 500% hike in local car park fees. With over 8,000 petition signatures, lobbying, and meetings with the MP, they’ve forced a partial U-turn and secured consultation, but continue to fight after a 1,000-transaction drop in a 37-space car park.

John Halliday, Bira Marketing Director

“What really stood out about Frankie & Johnny’s is how they don’t just run a brilliant shop they actively help shape the whole high street. Their impact goes far beyond their own front door.”

SPECIAL MENTION from Bira CEO Andrew Goodacre | Rocket & Bird, Somerset

Rocket and Bird is a Taunton-based independent shop, supporting local makers, fostering community connections, and promoting the town’s vibrant high street.

Rocket and Bird has been operating for six years, built on the principle that customers are central to a small shop. From the beginning, the owner aimed to make people feel part of the journey, sharing both the business and personal experiences. Over time, strong relationships have developed—listening, chatting, laughing, and sometimes offering comfort. For some visitors, the shop may be the only place they interact with someone that day, so it always provides a warm welcome and safe space.

During Covid, the shop launched an online store, handwriting messages, wrapping gifts, and hand-delivering local orders. Community support helped the business survive and later relocate to a larger space. Selling locally made items allows customers to order bespoke, personalised pieces, offering a high level of service. Beyond the shop, the owner founded Taunton Independent Quarter to promote over 50 local businesses. Through social media, press coverage, trails, and poster campaigns, they have helped showcase the town’s independents, inspiring neighbouring towns to follow suit. A crowdfunding campaign also funded vibrant murals, improving the area and boosting footfall. The shop supports 30+ local makers, celebrates creativity, and helps keep Taunton’s high street alive.

Andrew Goodacre, CEO of Bira

“We were so impressed by the way Rocket & Bird champion local businesses and makers. Their passion shines through, indie stars of the future! Despite not quite making the final shortlist, we felt it was right they were honoured as part of our awards.”

Driftwood Designs | Aberystwyth

Driftwood Designs is a creative Welsh business combining art, retail, and community, with shops, local support, and UK-made products.

Driftwood Designs was founded 13 years ago by school friends Lizzie Spikes and Becky Barratt. What began as a small venture selling prints and cards at a local farmers market has grown into a thriving creative business with three high street shops across Wales, a large e-commerce store, and a team of 18 full and part-time staff. Driftwood Designs also supplies products to over 200 wholesale customers, reaching from the top of Scotland to the Isle of Wight. All manufacturing is proudly sourced within the UK.

At its core, Driftwood Designs is a customer-focused business. High street shoppers benefit from special offers, bespoke products made to order, and even hand-delivery of local orders when needed. All three shops have Welsh-speaking staff to serve customers in their first language, and each location is dog- and cat-friendly, encouraging customers to browse comfortably with their pets.

The business plays an active role in supporting the local community. They regularly donate raffle prizes to charities and community events and fund the design and printing of an independent retailers map for Aberystwyth to help promote local businesses. Driftwood Designs also leads the creative work for the town’s annual ‘shop local’ campaigns, funding posters and signage.

They help organise and promote children’s activities throughout the year and sponsor several local initiatives, including a children’s football team and gym memberships for the local adult women’s team. The business is also a proud sponsor of the local business awards, which celebrate the achievements of fellow independents.
