Wales extends rates relief for another year

Bira has welcomed a move by the Welsh Government to extend rates relief for all retailers for another year.

The announcement followed the Budget yesterday when the Chancellor declared businesses in England would have full rrates relilef until June, then pay a reduced amount until next March.

However, the Welsh Government has followed Scottish Parlaiment's decision to give retailers 100% rates relief for a full year to boost recover from the pandemic.

The relief will be applied to any business with an rateable value of up to £500,000, it was said.

Andrew Goodacre, Bira's CEO, said: "Bira is delighted with this decision. The Welsh government has fully recognised the challenge faced by retail over the next 12 months and this is a very positive decision.

"It makes it hard to understand why England is making businesses pay 25% of their rates in 2021/22."
