Trotter and Deane is celebrating 35 years of trading, highlighting how consistency, community and customer relationships remain key to long-term success on the UK high street.
An independent menswear retailer has marked an impressive 35-year milestone on the high street, celebrating not only its business growth but the long-standing relationships that have supported it along the way.
Trotter and Deane, which first opened its doors in Bury St Edmunds in 1991, has built its reputation on a clear and consistent vision: combining traditional British tailoring with the colour and flair of Italian style, all while putting the customer experience front and centre.
After 26 successful years in Bury St Edmunds, the business expanded to Cambridge, strengthening its presence and evolving into a lifestyle brand. This growth reflects the retailer’s ability to adapt while staying true to its identity – a balancing act many independent businesses will recognise.
Today, the retailer works closely with some of the finest manufacturers and fabric producers across the UK and Europe. From Shetland crofters supplying premium wool to renowned silk weavers in Como, these partnerships have helped shape a distinctive menswear offering that has stood the test of time.
Over the decades, collections have continued to evolve in line with changing trends and customer expectations. Yet at the heart of the business has been a consistent focus on quality, craftsmanship and personal service – values that continue to resonate strongly with its customer base.
To mark the anniversary, the team hosted a special evening for loyal customers, recognising the relationships that have been built over more than three decades. Some customers have been shopping with the retailer for over 30 years, highlighting the depth of trust and connection that independent high street businesses can foster.

Reflecting on the milestone, the business credits its longevity to that continued support from customers, as well as a commitment to evolving with the market while maintaining the personal touch that sets independents apart.
Looking ahead, the senior team remains focused on building on this success, continuing to adapt to an ever-changing retail landscape while strengthening its brand for future generations.
This milestone serves as a reminder of the vital role independent retailers play on the high street – not just as businesses, but as part of the fabric of their local communities.
Andrew Goodacre, CEO of Bira, said: “Reaching 35 years on the high street is a fantastic achievement and something Trotter and Deane should be proud of. This milestone is a real testament to the strength of independent retail.
On behalf of Bira, we congratulate them on this milestone and wish them continued success for many years to come.”
