Bira has confirmed it will continue its support for National Pet Shop Day in 2026, partnering once again with Johnson’s Veterinary Products to champion independent pet retailers across the UK.
Now in its second year supporting the campaign, Bira is doubling down on its commitment after seeing the impact National Pet Shop Day delivered in 2025. The initiative aligns closely with Bira’s core mission: supporting independent businesses, strengthening local communities, and helping turn positive consumer sentiment into real, sustainable footfall.
New research from Johnson’s Veterinary Products highlights both the opportunity and the challenge facing independent pet retailers. While two thirds of pet owners say independent pet shops are important to their community and more than half would be upset if theirs closed, only one in eight currently choose independents as their main source of pet products.
This gap between sentiment and shopping behaviour is something many independent retailers will recognise. Customers value what independent businesses offer but do not always follow through with their purchasing decisions.
National Pet Shop Day 2026 aims to bridge that gap. The campaign provides independent retailers with a national platform, practical promotional tools, and the collective backing of key industry organisations including Bira, the Ornamental Aquatic Trade Association (OATA), and the Pet Industry Federation.
By bringing the sector together, the campaign is designed to encourage more consumers to actively support their local pet shops, helping businesses not just survive, but grow on today’s high street.
Bira is encouraging pet retailers to get involved and make the most of the campaign to boost awareness, engagement and footfall within their local communities.
