In the face of alarming statistics revealing a 24% surge in theft and robbery against retailers in the past year, The British Independent Retailers Association (Bira) is rallying its members to support the crucial Retail Crime petition initiated by the Federation of Independent Retailers (Fed). With over 850 incidents of abuse and violence reported daily, the need for immediate action to protect shop owners and staff is more pressing than ever.

The staggering rise in criminal activities is a cause for concern, prompting Bira to take a stand against the unacceptable levels of violence faced by retailers across the country. On average, the installation of essential security measures such as CCTV, panic buttons, and security alarms costs independent retailers over £4,500—an expenditure that proves challenging for many, given the financial strain imposed by rising costs and reduced profit margins.

Recognising the severity of the situation, Bira is urging its members to sign the petition, which calls upon the Home Office to provide security grants of up to £1,500. These grants are crucial in enabling small retailers to enhance their security measures and fortify their establishments against criminal activities.

The financial burden of implementing security measures has been a significant hurdle for independent retailers who are already grappling with the economic challenges posed by increasing costs and shrinking profit margins. The call for security grants is not just a plea for financial assistance but a collective effort to create safer environments for both retailers and the communities they serve.

The petition is a call to action for the Home Office to prioritise the safety of small retailers by providing the necessary financial support to enhance security measures.

By signing the petition, Bira members are not only advocating for their own safety but also contributing to the broader effort to reduce crime rates in communities nationwide.
