Bira welcomes rates relief extension in Scotland

Bira has welcomed the extension of the business rates holiday in Scotland for a further 12 months.

Scottish Finance Secretary Kate Forbes announced the measure yesterday, meaning the relief will apply for retailers, and those in the hospitality, aviation, and leisure sectors, until March 31, 2022.

In Scotland’s draft Budget announcement last month, Forbes said the holiday would be extended for a further three months, ending on June 30, 2021. At the time, Bira said this was not enough for the sector, sorely impacted by coronavirus over the last year.

The pressure is now on Chancellor Rishi Sunak to extend business rates relief for another year in England and Wales. He is expected to announce his decision in the Budget on March 3.

Andrew Goodacre, Bira's CEO, said: "Well done to the Scottish government for leading the way with ongoing support for independent retail.

"We said three months relief (original announcement) was not enough and we are delighted to see that the Scottish Ministers have responded by extending the rates relief for a further 12 months. Independent retailers throughout the UK have all been impacted and we would like to see the same positive approach adopted in England, Wales and Northern Ireland."

Bira is encouraging retailer to write to their MPs demanding the Government extend rates relief for another year. Find your template letter here
