Crime unit provides latest advice for Bira members

A crime prevention unit is sharing information with Bira members in a bid to help protect their businesses amid the outbreak of Covid-19.

The National Police Intelligence Team is highlighting some of the retail crime trends emerging as a result of the UK-wide lockdown.

Announced by PM Boris Johnson on March 23, the lockdown included the closure of all non-essential shops and services. It is expected to last at least another three weeks, leading to further concerns about the vulnerability of empty properties, along with those businesses which are still able to trade.

To remind members of the importance of property security and personal safety, and to encourage retailers to review their insurance policies, police have issued details of the following incidents:

• One supermarket chain arranged the full de-cashing of all their ATMs – to reduce the chance of loss. Any retailers hosting an ATM are advised to consider this as the number of ram raids of ATMs has been increasing nationally.

• Range Rover was stolen from the property, which was later used in a ram raid on ATM.

• Mask-wearing, machete-carrying offenders raiding a supermarket at closing time, stealing bags of coins valued at £4,000.

• Facebook page launched by a man in Birmingham to incite looting. Police are concerned this could be an emerging trend.

• Gaming machines targeted in pub break-ins in Staffordshire and Cheshire areas. Takeaways, cafes and other retailers with gaming machines are advised to exact caution.

• Scam phone calls asking retailers to put cigarettes into a waiting taxi or take photos of stock.
