An independent DIY retailer has claimed the runner-up spot in a prestigious national award celebrating the UK's Favourite Local Business.
The award, organised by retail technology specialist Miconex, highlights exceptional local businesses, with Isle of Wight-based Bira member W. Hurst & Son securing second place, following its win in the same award in 2022.
The award’s top 5 was made up entirely by independent businesses, with every nominee being part of one of Miconex's Town and City Gift Card programmes.
Andrew Goodacre, CEO of Bira, said: "It's fantastic to see our talented indie retailers recognised for all their hard work and importance within their communities.
"Congratulations to W. Hurst & Son for the accolade and I can't wait to hear about more successes from our members heading into next year."
Over 4,000 votes were cast with more than 1,000 businesses nominated across the UK, with the award showcasing the breadth of appreciation for local businesses.
Colin Munro, managing director of Miconex, said: “Congratulations to every business who was nominated in the competition. The nominations showed just how valued local businesses are within our communities.
"In our 2024 research, 98 per cent of people said support for local was important to them, and 82 per cent said supporting local businesses has become more important to them over the past 12 months."
Aberdeen-based furniture store Annie Mo's won the title of the UK's Favourite Local Business, with Sisters & Misters in Falkirk claimed third place. The Ethical Gift Shop & Refillery in Aberdeenshire and Yorkshire toy shop Games Crusade secured fourth and fifth place respectively.
