Bira's guidance on end of mandatory mask wearing in England

Bira is offering guidance to retailers concerned about the end of mandatory mask wearing in England on Monday (July 19, 2021).

The Government has announced that from Monday it will no longer be a legal requirement to wear a face mask in shops and other indoor spaces. The decision concides with stage 4 of coronavirus restriction lifting, and the reopening of other businesses such as nightclubs.

Bira's CEO Andrew Goodacre - who gave some advice for Freedom Day here - has issued the following advice:

  • Revise your risk assessment
  • Talk to employees and agree a workplace policy regarding masks for employees only
  • Do not enforce mask-wearing from shopper but you can encourage, especially if you feel the shop is busy.
  • Maintain the high levels of cleaning surfaces, provision of hand sanitiser, etc. You can stock up at Bira Direct
  • Retain Perspex screens if you want to
  • Ventilate the shop and work areas as much as possible - open doors, windows use mechanical ventilation

He said: "I urge independent retailers to develop plans for their business and incorporate the guidance where possible. Some customers will choose to wear face coverings. Some will not and all the retailer can do is to encourage facemasks – they cannot be enforced in a retail setting."

Andrew spoke to the London Evening Standard about the confusion amongst businesses here
