Energy regulator Ofgem has issued stakeholders with and published an open letter directed at non-domestic energy suppliers. The letter, which you can read here sets out good practice expectations from suppliers on issues surrounding debt management and disconnection of customers. Ofgem expects suppliers to apply the good practices they have identified in these areas.

Bira CEO Andrew Goodacre has made the following comments on the ongoing energy situation for independent retailers:

‘It is important that you receive the correct levels of service from your energy provider. We have been sent this letter by Ofgem and we think it is important to share it with you. In short, Ofgem expects energy companies to provide good practice expectations in their dealing with their non-domestic customers (businesses). As this letter has been sent to the suppliers, you can reference it should you have any issues, and notify Ofgem directly.’

Ofgem has also stated that they will continue to monitor, via cases they receive from Citizens Advice, the Ombudsman, and other sources, to see whether suppliers are applying good practices in their approach to non-domestic disconnection.

For clarity, this letter does not set any further obligations on suppliers.
