New research has revealed that more than two thirds of pet owners believe independent pet shops are an important part of their community, ahead of National Pet Shop Day on Saturday 11 July.
The research, commissioned by Johnson's Veterinary Products, found that 67% of pet owners value independent pet shops and 57% said they would be upset if their local store closed, despite only 12% using one as their main source of pet products.
The findings also showed that 19% of pet owners never visit their local pet shop in a typical month, highlighting what organisers describe as a growing gap between public support for independents and shopping habits.
Now returning for its third year, National Pet Shop Day aims to encourage pet owners to support local retailers while giving independent shops a national platform to promote their services and expertise.
The campaign has continued to expand since launching, with more than 500 independent pet shops across the UK taking part last year after retailer participation doubled in its second year, while registration for the 2026 event is now open.
Paul Gwynn, Chairman of Johnson's Veterinary Products, said: "The research tells us what independent retailers have always known. Pet owners trust their local shop, value its advice, and would genuinely miss it if it disappeared. National Pet Shop Day is a reminder that trust alone won't keep these businesses open. We need people to act on it."
Johnson's Veterinary Products said independent pet shops continue to play an important role in supporting animal health and wellbeing by offering face-to-face advice, reassurance and affordable treatment support for minor conditions.
Retailers signing up for the campaign will receive a free promotional pack, access to a PR and social media toolkit, a listing on the National Pet Shop Day interactive map and an additional 10% discount on orders with Johnson’s Veterinary Products.
Pet owners visiting participating stores on the day will also have the chance to win a £500 Pets in Pyjamas holiday voucher, while a separate competition will award three retailers £500 vouchers for the best in-store celebrations and activities.
