Tributes are being paid for a former president of the British Independent Retailers Association (Bira), Russell Johnson, also known as ‘Our Kermit’ who passed away earlier this month.

Mr Johnson, aged 77, was found  collapsed in his home by his daughter, Julie, and sadily passed away the following day, June 12.

Russell Johnson, formerly of Johnson's of Rainham, was a highly respected figure within the Bira and British Hardware Federation (BHF) communities. Over the years, he held numerous positions, from Branch Chairman to National President, and also served on the board, significantly contributing to the growth and development of the associations.

Andrew Goodacre, CEO of Bira, expressed his condolences and said: "Although I never had the pleasure of meeting Russell, people in Bira have told me that he was a very talented man and well respected within the industry. We remember him fondly as he was a very active member. We send our deepest condolences to his family. Mr Johnson's commitment to the industry and community has left an indelible mark, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him."

In his memory, donations can be made to the Rainy Day Trust, a cause close to his heart.

The funeral service for Mr Johnson will be held on July 18 at 3pm at the Garden of England Crematorium in Kent. Friends, family, and colleagues are invited to attend and pay their respects.
