The Welsh Government has commissioned Alma Economics to examine what decarbonisation initiatives are currently being undertaken by small retailers in Wales, or by larger retailers where measures could realistically be implemented by smaller businesses, with findings used to inform future policy.
A Call for Evidence has been launched to collect practical examples of initiatives already in place, including recycling and take-back schemes, energy-efficient refrigeration and lighting, on-site renewable energy generation, and actions to reduce emissions from deliveries and logistics.
The Call for Evidence is open to all retailers, retail organisations and trade representatives across Wales, and seeks initiatives that reduce retailers’ own carbon footprints as well as those that help customers lower their environmental impact through reuse, repair and recycling schemes.
Respondents are asked to provide information on how initiatives were designed and delivered, their funding and duration, target customers, partnerships involved, and any challenges, successes or lessons learned, including evidence of return on investment or potential for replication.
The research will help capture current activity across the retail sector, identify barriers and enablers to wider adoption, and strengthen the evidence base to support future Welsh Government policy on decarbonisation in retail.
The survey takes up to 25 minutes to complete, allows submissions of up to three initiatives, and closes at 23:59 on 16 January 2026, with responses submitted through the survey linked below.
Share initiatives you've implemented on decarbonisation
If you're an independent retailer in Wales and have implemented decarbonisation and sustainability initiatives, share them in the survey below to help guide future policy decisions.
