Employment Law and the EU Reform Bill
The biggest employment law update in years has taken form in the upcoming EU Reform Bill. As part of the bill, the government is planning to change and abolish many of the existing employment laws upheld as previous members of the EU.
What does the EU Reform Bill mean to independent retailers?
In a recent poll conducted by Worknest, 68% of organisations don’t understand and aren’t aware of the potential implications of the proposed Retained EU Law Bill. Here is a basic overview of the proposed changes to be put through parliament by December 2023:
- The bill was published in the House of Commons on 22 September 2022, amidst the controversial mini-budget
- The aim is to revoke over 2,400 pieces of EU legislation contained in the UK statute book at the end of the Brexit transition period
- It covers many areas from competition law to data protection and employment law including working time regulations, agency worker regulations, and the Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) Regulations 2006
However, the UK-EU Trade and Cooperation Agreement (‘TCA’) signed on 30 December 2020 states that if changes are made to UK employment law which has a material effect on trade and investment or reduce employment rights, then we may face fines from the EU, meaning that many of the planned changes may not come into effect.
