An independent bike shop in Yorkshire has been crowned the inaugural winner of the Local Bike Shop Awards, securing a remarkable 42% of the public vote.
Thousands of cycling enthusiasts across the UK took part in the vote, recognising independent cycle retailers that go above and beyond to support local cyclists, champion active travel and keep high streets thriving. The awards are backed by more than 20 industry partners and form part of Local Bike Shop Week, which runs from 3–9 May.
Now in its 18th year, Big Bear Bikes has established itself as a leading independent retailer in North Yorkshire, operating from its Pickering store alongside its sister site, Dalby Forest Cycle Hub. The business combines a broad retail offering with an inclusive, customer‑focused approach, delivering workshop support and welcoming riders of all ages and abilities.
The winner was selected from eight finalists, shortlisted by an industry judging panel from more than 50 entries submitted by independent cycle retailers nationwide. The public vote closed on Thursday 30 April, with the announcement timed to coincide with Local Bike Shop Week.
Jonathan Harrison, ACT Director, said: "Congratulations to Big Bear Bikes on winning the inaugural Local Bike Shop Awards. Big Bear Bikes stood out for their commitment to inclusive cycling and outstanding customer service. From providing adapted bikes for riders with additional needs to delivering structured progression programmes through Dalby Forest Cycle Hub, they demonstrate everything that makes independent bike shops vital to their communities. They're a worthy winner and a brilliant example of what can be achieved when passion meets expertise."
Big Bear Bikes offers an extensive range of bicycles, accessories and workshop services, delivered by Cytech‑trained technicians and apprentices. Through Dalby Forest Cycle Hub, the business also provides inclusive cycling opportunities – from learn‑to‑ride sessions through to advanced trail skills – alongside clubs, events and wider community initiatives.
The Local Bike Shop Week Awards form part of Local Bike Shop Week, an industry-wide initiative managed by the ACT. Local Bike Shop Week 2026 marks the expansion of what was previously a single-day celebration into a full week of activities showcasing independent cycle retailers.
