The 2025 Community Barometer from the Association of Convenience Stores (ACS) reveals how UK consumers view the value of local services in their communities.
The latest Community Barometer from the Association of Convenience Stores (ACS) offers a valuable snapshot of how voters across the UK view local services and their impact on community wellbeing.
Based on a nationwide survey of 2,000 consumers conducted in June 2025, the report highlights the types of businesses people want most on their high streets—and those they believe play a vital role in local life.
Key findings:
- Top Contributors to the Local Economy: Convenience stores, Post Offices, and pharmacies are once again ranked as the top three services seen as having the most positive impact on local communities.
- Most Desired Services: Banks continue to top the list as the most wanted service, reflecting ongoing concerns over accessibility as branches close across the country.
- Non-Food Retail: Non-food shops ranked third in the “most wanted” list, showing strong consumer demand for a variety of retail options beyond essential services.
- Safety Concerns: One in five shoppers say that shop theft makes them feel less safe in their local area.
The report offers actionable insights for policymakers, local leaders, and retailers alike. It’s particularly useful for independent retailers looking to understand changing public priorities, diversify their offerings, or strengthen their community presence.
