A Small Business Strategy Select Committee, low value imports and 'upwards only rent reviews' are the areas of focus for Bira this month.

Hello,

It has been a busy month in terms of campaigning:

  • I attended a business Select Committee reviewing the Government's small business strategy. Not all business groups were invited and this is further recognition of our growing influence.

  • Bira is leading a campaign within the Retail Sector Council to close the loophole for low value imports (anything below £135 comes into the country duty free and often free of VAT). We believe the millions of packages coming into the country is a further threat to high streets.

  • Bira has had an important campaign victory with the announcement of the ban on 'upwards only rent reviews'. This is important for commercial tenants who in the past only ever see the rent go up because of the law. Hopefully this change in policy will better balance the relationship between landlords and tenants.

Thank you.

Andrew
