Distributor take back scheme - Phase 6 Registration
The Distributor Take-back Scheme (DTS)
The Distributor Take-back Scheme (DTS) is operated by Valpak Retail WEEE Services (VRWS) and allows members an exemption from the in-store take-back requirement of the WEEE regulations when a new equivalent piece of EEE is purchased.
The DTS is the only scheme which allows members an alternative to offering takeback for all WEEE categories (except for PV panels). There is a separate scheme which covers PV panels.
The DTS has been operating since 2007. Phase 6 of the scheme started in January 2022 and the DTS website is still open for registrations.
Phase 6 Registration
Phase 6 of the scheme runs from 1st January 2022 until 31st December 2023.
The funds raised in Phase 6 will continue to be used to support Local Authority projects with the aim to increase WEEE collections and there will be a process in place to monitor the benefits achieved throughout the phase.
Important Note: Phase 6 is no longer applicable to retailers that sell more than £100,000 worth of electrical items and have at least one physical store (Bands A & B). Band C members and larger online/distance seller-only retailers are still members until 31st December 2023.
In addition, under the UK WEEE Regulations, distributors who supply new EEE from retail premises where the sales area relating to EEE exceeds 400m² must provide facilities to collect very small WEEE (see Electrical waste: retailer and distributor responsibilities), regardless of whether similar new equipment is purchased. The DTS alternative for retailers who meet this requirement in 25% or more of their stores is to make an additional payment equivalent to 25% of the applicable fees.
If you have any queries about the DTS or the registration process, please contact Valpak Retail WEEE by email at DTS@valpak.co.uk or telephone 03450 682 572.
