Getting set up on social media as a small business can feel daunting, especially with the pressure to stand out in a crowded marketplace and constantly engage with your audience. So as a first step, we’d recommend you start with one of the top platforms – Facebook.

Facebook is the most widely used by potential customers and is good for a wide variety of things like helping customers find your shop, your contact details and your website. It’s also great for posting updates like new sales, new product lines or upcoming events.

Here’s how you can set up a business page on Facebook quicky – while also covering all the important steps:

1.  Choose Business Page: Go to Facebook and log in (if you haven’t already got a personal Facebook account, you’ll need to create on as you need one to link a business page to), navigate to the “Pages” section and select "Create new profile or Page." Out of the choice between “Personal profile” or “Public page”, choose the latter – this will get you the set up you need for your business page.

2.  Add Basic Details: Add your business name and category. Consistency with your bricks and mortar brand is key here; you’ll want to use the same name across all platforms as closely as you can. The category should be the most applicable to your business.

3.  Write your Bio: Write a concise business description with relevant keywords. This can simply be a description of what your business is – where you’re based, what you sell, how long you’ve been established and other key information.

TIP:  You can use AI to help get those algorithm-friendly keywords in! There’s free resources available, and when you’re ready to step up your digital presence you can take a look at Bira’s member benefits to see how Maybe* AI can save you time and help you reach more potential customers.

4.  Click “Create”: Everything else from this point is optional, but there’s a couple more quick things that’ll start your business page off right.

5.  Add Key Information (contact, location, opening hours): This is an important step, be sure to fill in as many details as you can as this will make the top of your page as comprehensive as possible and helps you appear to more people on the platform.

6.  Profile and Cover Photo: Upload a recognizable logo for the profile photo and an attractive, separate image like your shop front for the cover photo.

TIP:  Use a simple version of the logo with less text, as it will change in size across the platform.

7.  Add a Call-to-Action: Use the call-to-action (CTA) button (e.g., "Shop Now," "Contact Us"). This is a great tool for helping you reach your customers or link them to an online e-commerce store. For now though, a simple ‘Contact Us’ is a good place to start.

8.  Invite Friends to Follow Your Page: You can ask your personal Facebook connections to connect with your new page. This is a great way to start building an audience – and if they can also share the page, all the better!

Now you’ve got a business page set up on Facebook, let’s look at Instagram
