In short, we do not believe the current business rates proposal is radical enough or does enough to support the smaller retailers. The fight for further reform continues!

- Update from Andrew Goodacre, CEO of Bira | April 2025

Hello,

Our main areas of focus in recent weeks have been:

  • Business rates and responding to the government's proposed reforms in 2026. In short, we do not believe the current proposal is radical enough or does enough to support the smaller retailers. The fight for further reform continues!

  • Retail crime and ASB on high streets are still a problem. Lots of media coverage as we push for more policing.

  • Lots of meetings with MPs and Government ministers to discuss the investment needed in high streets throughout the UK. Productive discussions but actions will always speak louder than words.

  • Trump tariffs – too early to tell the impact on members. Our immediate concern is the impact on consumer confidence (stock markets crashing, price rises, interest rates remaining high) as not many people outside the US government seem to think this is good news!

Thanks,

Andrew
