A review of rules around small packages coming into the UK is just one of a number of areas of focus for Bira this month.

Hello,

Key issues in the past couple of months have included:

  • Responding to the government consultation on business rates. This remains a constant thorn in the side of our members and we are working hard to improve the deal for the smaller retailers.

  • Successfully achieving a review of the rules for small packages coming into the UK. Currently, any packages with a value less than £135 are free from duty (and in many cases also avoid VAT). Last month the Chancellor announced a review and we now wait for the formal consultation. This is a positive result and hopefully this loophole will be closed as it is detrimental to physical shops on high streets.

  • Retail crime continues to receive a lot of focus with our latest research indicating that the situation for members is not improving.

  • The Employment Rights Bill is looming large. The changes here will make it harder for smaller employers to employ people. We fear it may impact on younger people and part-time jobs and Bira wants retail workers to be treated fairly. Some of these changes being proposed will inevitably increase employment costs at a time when it is least affordable.

Thank you.

Andrew
