Bira CEO and Bira member director attended a meeting in Cardiff as a part of the Welsh Retail Forum
Bira CEO, Andrew Goodacre and Bira member director, Michael Hughes, both attended a meeting in Cardiff as a part of the Welsh Retail Forum. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the outline retail strategy for Wales that is being developed by the Retail Forum, and also present were representatives of some of the large retail chains.
Also in attendance was Vaughan Gething, the Welsh Minister for the Economy. Mr Gething gave an overview of the Welsh economy and the importance of retail to Wales (for example, retail is the largest private employer in Wales). Michael Hughes asked Mr Gething about business rates next year, but no commitment was given as Wales is also awaiting the outcome of the Autumn statement next week.
The discussion on the Welsh retail strategy was productive with a focus on the challenge of recruiting and retaining staff, the investment and development of high streets and the ability of businesses to withstand the current economic crisis
Bira will be attending future meetings as this strategy develops and it welcomes any insight that members in Wales wish to share with us.
