Andrew Goodacre, CEO of Bira, recently met with the Low Pay Commission (LPC) to discuss thoughts around the National Minimum Wage (NMW) and potential increases last year.
It was a good and honest meeting, the LPC clearly wanted to know about the pressures faced by businesses and the potential impact of any increases in NMW. Andrew explained that indie retailers are already facing a tsunami of extra costs. Andrew further explained that retailers are not against employees earning more, but NMW must not match the expected 10% inflation rate next year (as reported recently by the Bank of England). Finally, Andrew encourage the LPC to do some research with Bira members which they agreed to.
This is clearly an important topic and we will monitor the work being done by the LPC.
