08 April 2022

Due to ongoing cost pressures, Bira Direct supplier Durston Garden Products has announced an emergency crisis surcharge from 14th April 2022.

Durston Garden Products Ltd is an established family-run business supplying quality growing media backed up with an unrivalled approach to customer service.
Manufacturers of quality composts, growing media and other garden products, Durston Garden Products Ltd has been a family-run business for over 150 years. Its reputation for quality and service is recognised throughout the United Kingdom.

In a letter to their business partners and customers, they have said:

Dear Customers and Partners,

I write in connection with the escalating Global fuel crisis, which has been created by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Although heart-breaking to watch and whilst we have been hoping to see an end to the crisis, we are receiving extremely significant surcharges and price increases from suppliers of transport, polythene and fertiliser, all of which are derived from oil.

This affects both raw material costs being hauled into us for blending and manufacture as well as delivery of finished products. We can not continue to absorb all of this surcharge, so for all orders placed after 5pm on the 14th April 2022 we will have to pass on some of that surcharge to you the customer which I truly hope you can understand.

Additionally, there are other factors which will affect costs, which are mostly oil-related, including that from 1st April 2022 we had to move from agricultural spec red diesel to road fuel (white diesel) which we had factored, however, we could not have anticipated the much-inflated price of that white diesel which is having a huge effect on our monthly fuel costs.

We thank you for your understanding on this difficult matter, particularly during peak season and we will continue to monitor the fuel crisis and will review this "Emergency Crisis Surcharge" accordingly.

Regrettably, we are going to have to make an "Emergency Crisis Surcharge" of £8.00 per pallet, for all orders placed after 5pm on the 14th April 2022. This will be reviewed on 30th April 2022, when "HOPEFULLY" we can make a reduction to this surcharge.

Please note, we cannot accept forward orders to avoid the "Emergency Crisis Surcharge" (orders to arrive after the normal 5 days for full loads and 10 days for part loads).

Kind regards

Dan Durston, Director
