With the recent dry spell and warm weather, the risk of disposable barbeques catching fire is at a high

The London Fire Brigade has been calling for a ban on disposable BBQs through various media outlets in the past few days.

The London Fire Brigade advised the following:

Last week, London Fire Brigade faced our busiest day since the Second World War. We took 8,302 calls and attended 3,231 incidents, including more than 30 grass fires in London that required at least four fire engines to attend.

These issues were replicated across the UK, as 15 fire and rescue services declared major incidents due to the extreme conditions. With more hot, dry weather expected over the coming weeks and months, there is a significant risk that fire and rescue services could continue to face similar pressure over the summer.

Disposable barbeques can cause extensive damage when land is dry to both the environment and property. They cause fires when smouldering ash and embers are carried by the wind onto areas of dry grass, and disposable barbecues that have been discarded and abandoned can still end up causing a fire as they will continue to retain heat after use.

Whilst speaking to various media outlets, the LFB is backing a parliamentary petition which has almost 16,000 signatures and is part of their longer goal of banner disposable barbeques. The next step is for the government to respond.

We urge all retailers selling disposable barbeques to ensure purchasers are aware of the risk. This could be as simple as informing them of the risk when purchasing at the till.
