Revised business rates and devolved countries

In the Autumn statement we saw some positive news for retail with regards to business rates – the multiplier was frozen, the downwards transitional relief was cancelled and (most importantly) a new retail discount rate of 75% was introduced.

However, these changes only apply to businesses in England. Business rates is a devolved responsibility and the devolved nations have the right to set their own business rates structure. Consequently we have joined other retail associations in writing to the devolved governments and urging them to follow the example being set in England.

In our view all independent retailers should receive the same level of support, irrespective of where they are located. For our members in Scotland and Wales, then we would also ask you to contact your local MP to raise the issue with the Ministers in the devolved governments.
