The best 10 high streets in the UK have been unveiled by new research from American Express in time for the thick of the Christmas season.
The findings, part of the Shop Small research, identified the UK’s most vibrant independent shopping areas, with St Mary’s Street in Stamford, Lincolnshire topping the list for its “thriving mix of local businesses and unique shopping experience.” Second place was awarded to Devonshire Street and Division Street in Sheffield, with Gloucester Road in Bristol rounded off the top three.
The research, which was carried out in partnership with retail experts GlobalData, considered various factors including the concentration of Gen Z and Millennial business owners in each location, highlighting how much younger generations are investing in the future of their high street.
Dan Edelman, General Manager of Merchant Services at American Express, said: “Small businesses play a crucial role in supporting local economies up and down the country. Through our Shop Small campaign, we’re proud to champion the vibrant independents that make our communities thrive.”
The research comes as Small Business Saturday, held over the weekend, celebrated its 12th year of encouraging the UK to support local businesses. The campaign, backed by American Express since its inception, has seen billions of pounds in spent with small businesses nationwide throughout its time.
Also coinciding with Small Business Saturday was the closing of nominations to AMEX’s Champion Small initiative, with 10 high street businesses selected to receive a share of a £100,000 grant. The expert judging panel, which includes Andrew Goodacre, CEO of Bira, will select winners based on customer reviews, product innovation, community impact and how the grant will positively benefit their business.
Michelle Ovens, Director of Small Business Saturday, said: “Small businesses bring immense value to the UK’s economy, society, and communities. This research underlines the importance of supporting local independents, particularly the next generation of owners, to ensure their impact endures.”
The report also revealed that homebuyers are willing to pay an average of £12,000 more for properties near bustling independent high streets, highlighting their influence on both community value and house prices.
