More than two-thirds of consumers believe retailers are responsible for reducing the amount of plastic used in their packaging. As an independent retailer, it may be difficult to know where to start. That's why we've produced a guide on how to approach suppliers to ask them to reduce plastic packaging.

Whether you decide to approach your supply chain on the phone, via email or in a letter, this guide will help you persuade your suppliers to make a change.

1. Use your brand loyalty as leverage

it's a good idea to mention how long you've been trading with a supplier. Illustrate the reasons why you trade with them, but also express the disappointment that their level of sustainability doesn't match your own goals.

2. Show evidence of the environmental impact caused by excess plastic packaging

Make the company aware of the environmental issues caused by their current packaging methods. Back your claims with a reliable source. Some good examples of quotes specifically about plastic packaging include;

"Plastic packaging placed on the market in the UK totals 2.3 million tonnes" - Source wrap.org.uk

"Plastic packaging in the UK accounts for nearly 70% of our plastic waste" - Source wrap.org.uk

3. Be Kind

A positive approach will help your request go further. Be friendly but educational in your approach.

4. Be clear and concise

Make sure your request is direct and to the point. You may want to ask the supplier what their plans are to reduce plastic packaging going forward and give them an idea of what your expectations are of them.

5. Follow up

If you don't hear back within a couple of weeks, follow up with the supplier again. Once you've followed up two or three times, then it might be worth looking at reviewing your suppliers.
